My son is growing up

My son now at 4 1/2 years old.

I know I have not blogged in awhile, but this will all be worth the wait.

My son is now 4 1/2 and he is not shy telling you that himself.

I have had some interesting conversations with my son lately and in the past year.

This has started out with him starting to notice one day that mommy looked different than he did. In our family we are not shy to name ALL body part the proper names.

So I tell him that mommy has a vagina and boys have penises. Some how he was convinced that I had a penis and when I try to tell him that I had a vagina he would respond by saying, "let me see". NO I didn't show him and told him that was mommy's privates. I even had to stop taking baths and showers with him as he REALLY want to see what was so different about mommy.

So I went to our library in my small little town (494population) and got a health book out. It was dated from the 1970's. But it still had a page that showed the difference from a man and a woman. My son asked me for the names on the parts of the man and women. After I told him the proper names he walked away.

I thought I was done. Until one cold winter morning he told me that boys had penises and girls had a vagina. I told him that the was correct and thought that was it. BOY was I wrong. He kept telling me every day. Sometime 10x a day. It got to the point that no matter where we were, or who it was (stranger or not)(food shopping, restraunts, down a street), he told them that boys had penises and girls had a vagina. Finally I had to ignore what he was doing for him to stop and he did.

So we went months with not much happening except the occasional reminder from my son that boys and penises and girls had vaginas until I was writing letters to people. My son was drawing a picture and once again reminded me of what body part I had. Then he returned to his drawing looked at me and ask (with a look on his face as if he were not sure to ask), "how do you draw a vagina"? I held in my laugh told him he didn't need to know that now turned around and chuckled.

Since I teach the First Steps program at my school I had found these great puzzle that shows us all of our bodies and they have both female and male parts. It's a five layer puzzle that shows bones, than organs, than muscles, than the naked body, and ending with a dressed body. My son loves these puzzles.

A week goes by and I was watching "Father Of The Bride 2" on and off. My son and I were watching it from the part where both mom and daughter were in labour and my son asked "how do babies come out"? I simply told him one of two ways, either the doctor makes a small cut in the mommy's tummy and takes the baby out or the baby come out of the mommy's vagina. The look I got from his little face was as if I told him something crazy. I could no longer hold in my laugh and laugh out loud. He looked at me than and laughed with me called me a silly goose and asked me, "now for real how do babies come out"? So I repeated myself. Either the doctor makes a small cut in the mommy's tummy and the baby come out (at this point he asks me if this is the way the doctor does the cutting and does a rough movement and i told him it was done much more gently) or the baby comes out of the mommy's vagina. He laughed again called me a silly goose again and walked away.

Shortly after this my husband was doing a midnight shift and was sleeping during the day. Sometimes I will put my son in front of the tv and give him a snack and tell him I am going to go "lye down with daddy"!!!! When I got down stairs he asked me if daddy and I were having sex? I didn't answer him right away as I was shock to hear that kind of question came from my four year old. After I got out of the bathroom I ask him what he thought mommy and daddy were doing upstairs. He said while jumping on the couch with a big smile on his face, "Having SEEEX"! I asked where he learned that from, he said from TV. When I asked what program it was, he said it was mine. When I asked me what channel all he could give me was the channel to the tv program which has no preview to it just the schedule. So I left it at that.

I went to the library and saw that they had a bag book on body science for kids. In it was books of the body and the difference from boys and girls, and how babies come out and it had those great five layer puzzle of the body. So my son had fun checking all these things out and taking in all the new info. When he was done I had returned the bag book back and that was it.

Until this latest thing. I just had an appointment this week at the hospital and I went in first to go sign in. My son came in with daddy shortly after. Our son asked daddy if mommy was having a baby. Daddy asked him why he thought that. Our son's response was "because you and mommy have sex".

It seems that this little boy of mine really takes in what we say and what he saw in the book bag of body science.

My only question is "what is he going to ask next"?

This is my son at 9 1/2 months!
